H1 B – not a sustainable business model.

Back in 1991,  I had a professor Ronald Schill, BYU who was known as a very tough prof among the students. The best thing about him was he added great value to your thinking process as a management student. Many professors have this quality. But, he brought this around in a few ways, and one was by telling you upfront that your comment is not based on facts or conclusions drawn. This upfront thing made us alert and be careful in class. Wish this was more common. One such opportunity was lost yesterday

We had the good fortune of Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chief of Infosys visit Mysore and sermon us on where the economy is headed. The good news is “End of recession is after 18 months”.  On seeing this news i frantically searched for the facts of conclusions based on research. I found none.

Predictions are fine. And are a fashsion for IT honchos. Read this article for some curious predictions by Manoj Manjula of Infosys and Ramakrishna Maguluri, HR Manager, CA International

IT honchos have taken India for a ride. Left right and center. They have provided jobs, i agree, but, the magnitude of disparity and vouching that this business model is long lasting and sustainable has fooled both the public and politicians. Instances like the above predictions happen on a daily basis in India.

But, the questions what do innocent individual who aspires for a better life in USA and hoping that he can live a more dignified life in USA, do under these circumstances?

In fact, desi consultants have built fortunes in the last decade or so, based on this H1 B programme. Many non programmers have been imported, convincing them that they can somehow take up programming jobs and live. Many such scams have come to light. One such is the Vision Systems. As per the Gov. website Immigration and Customs the fraud is serious. If the govt. has fined  7 million dollars, it means that the amount is over  a period of time. It is definitely not a one transaction issue.

By providing companies low wage employees these companies were hurting  the employees, and getting into the wrong side of the law.

Built on this model, Indian software firms were behaving as if they were writing great search engines or products.

With the arrival of Obama, I expected he would, things have turned upside down. Predictions are muted, only the top three (out of the top four – satyam has become asatyam) are visible.

Now these companies have to wait for Obama’s plans to find some loopholes or will we mend our ways?
